EV charger installation Townsville

Fronius Wattpilot Flex

The Fronius Wattpilot Flex is a premium fixed wall-mounted EV charger designed for solar homes. It arrived in Australia in late 2025 and brings Fronius’s solar expertise directly to EV charging. When paired with a Fronius Gen24 inverter and Smart Meter, it automatically diverts your surplus solar into your car without any manual input required.

What the Wattpilot Flex does

Purpose-built to turn surplus solar into kilometres

Most EV chargers charge your car from whatever power is available. The Fronius Wattpilot Flex is designed around a different idea: charge from solar first, adapt to what is available, and never waste a ray of sunlight. It adjusts its charging rate dynamically based on your live solar generation, scaling from as low as 1.38kW right up to 11kW or 22kW depending on the model. When solar generation drops, it steps down rather than stopping. When surplus increases, it steps up. The result is more of your own solar ending up in your car and less being exported to the grid at the feed-in tariff rate.

PV-optimised solar surplus charging

Dynamically adjusts charging power to match available solar surplus. When paired with a Fronius Gen24 inverter and Smart Meter, the integration is fully automatic with no manual adjustment required.

Automatic phase switching

Switches automatically between single-phase and three-phase to get the most from available solar generation. At lower surplus levels it charges on single phase to keep charging going rather than stopping when the threshold drops.

Eco mode and Next Trip mode

Eco mode prioritises solar charging and minimises grid draw. Next Trip mode calculates the most cost-effective charging window to ensure your car is ready when you need it, useful for off-peak tariff scheduling on days with lower solar generation.

WiFi and Ethernet connectivity

The Flex adds Ethernet (LAN) connectivity alongside WiFi, which solves the garage connectivity issues that affected older Wattpilot models. A wired network connection means more reliable communication with the Solar.wattpilot app and the broader Fronius energy system.

Touch interface and LED status ring

Intuitive touch controls and a clear LED ring show charging status at a glance without needing to open the app. The telegrey cabinet won the German Design Award 2025 for its clean, considered design.
Durability and installation

Built for Australian conditions, designed for daily use

IP66 rated

Full protection against dust and water. Suitable for indoor or outdoor installation, including exposed carport walls and driveway locations. Townsville’s heavy wet season rainfall is not a concern for this unit.

6m Type 2 tethered cable

Both the 11kW and 22kW versions come with a 6m tethered Type 2 cable as standard. No need to carry a separate cable and no loose cables to store in the car.

Single and three phase compatible

Both versions support single-phase and three-phase electrical supply. The right model depends on your home’s supply and how fast you want to charge. We confirm the best option during the installation assessment.

Works without solar too

The Wattpilot Flex does not require solar to operate. Without a Fronius inverter, it functions as a smart scheduled charger, letting you charge during off-peak tariff windows through the app. The solar integration features activate when paired with a compatible Fronius system.

Dynamic load balancing

Monitors your home’s total power draw and adjusts charger output to prevent tripping the main breaker. Air conditioning, ovens and other high-demand appliances can run at the same time as the charger without risk of overloading the supply.

94.4% Wallbox Performance Index

In the 2025 Wallbox Inspection, the Fronius Wattpilot Flex Home 22 scored a 94.4% Wallbox Performance Index, placing second overall. This is an independent measure of how efficiently the charger transfers surplus solar into the vehicle.
Who the Wattpilot Flex suits

The natural EV charger for Fronius Gen24 owners

The Wattpilot Flex works with any electric vehicle and any home electrical supply. It delivers its best performance when paired with a Fronius Gen24 inverter and Fronius Smart Meter, where the solar surplus integration is fully automatic. For Fronius system owners, it is the most seamless EV charging option available.

Best for: Fronius Gen24 owners wanting automatic solar charging

With a Fronius Gen24 and Smart Meter, the Wattpilot Flex handles solar surplus charging fully automatically. No manual switching, no app intervention needed. The system monitors generation and load continuously and adjusts the charger in real time.

Best for: EV owners who want premium build quality and design

The Wattpilot Flex is a premium product in both build and design. It received the German Design Award 2025 and scored second overall in independent wallbox efficiency testing. For homeowners who want the best available fixed EV charger, this is a strong contender regardless of inverter brand.

Best for: homes without solar planning for off-peak charging

Even without solar, the Wattpilot Flex is a significant upgrade from a basic wall charger. Smart scheduling through the Solar.wattpilot app lets you charge automatically during off-peak tariff windows, and the unit is future-ready for solar integration when you are ready.
Townsville and EV charging

Why solar EV charging makes particular sense in Townsville

Townsville’s 320 sunny days a year mean most solar systems generate a surplus during the middle of the day that currently gets exported to the grid. The Wattpilot Flex is designed to capture that surplus and put it into your car instead. Given Townsville’s high solar resource, the gap between what you pay to charge from the grid versus what it costs to charge from your own generation is larger here than in most Australian cities.

Charge from solar you are already generating

The Wattpilot Flex scales down to 1.38kW to capture even small amounts of surplus solar. In Townsville most days produce enough surplus to provide meaningful charging, even on days with some cloud cover.

Future-ready for solar if you do not have it yet

If you are planning to install solar in the future, installing the Wattpilot Flex now means you have the right charger in place when that time comes. The solar surplus integration activates automatically once a compatible Fronius system is connected.

One installer for charger and solar

True North Solar installs both the Wattpilot Flex and Fronius Gen24 solar systems. If you are installing solar and an EV charger together, we handle both in a single visit and configure the integration before we leave.
Important to know

A note on solar integration requirements

The Fronius Wattpilot Flex works with any home as a smart scheduled EV charger. However, the automatic solar surplus charging feature that makes it stand out requires a compatible Fronius inverter and a Fronius Smart Meter. Without these, you can still use the charger with grid power and schedule charging through the app, but the charger will not automatically detect and use solar surplus.

If you have a non-Fronius inverter and want automatic solar surplus charging, the GoodWe HCA G2 or Sigenergy AC wallbox may be more appropriate depending on your existing equipment.

If you have or are planning to install a Fronius Gen24, the Wattpilot Flex is the most seamlessly integrated option and the one we recommend for Fronius system owners.
